JAPANESE HISTORY ABOUT THE TOYOTA CELICA:
Where did the Celica's actual style and inspiration come from? Here is a little bit of history that you don't hear much about, but many Celica owners know it.
It all started in 1964 with the Ford Mustang. This was a definite flag ship for Ford and one of the biggest turn-ons in the automotive world of it's day in the USA. Clear around the world in Japan, Toyota took notice of our love struck country over this Pony car. The Japanese also fell in love with her beautiful lines and power too. Japan's Toyota car manufacturer took on the challenge of designing Japan's very own version of the American Ford Mustang. After the completion, production followed, with shipments pouring into USA in 1971. In 1974, Toyota introduced the first GT 5 speed Celica which I own. In 1976, Toyota did not pull any strings when the Liftback rolled off the assembly line. This was by far the most obvious copy of the stylish Ford Mustang fastback and MACH1. Toyota did a great job on these cute versions of the Mustang and like the Mustang, The Celica stormed America with open arms.
Our family was crazy over them too, I owned the oldest one shown below, 1974. My brother owned a 1975 GT and my mother topped it all off with a 1976 GT Lift-back in a beautiful factory Root-beer brown metal-flaked paint. If you are a Celica owner as like us, you can understand exactly why our family owned 3 Celica's at one time. As most Celica owners know...once you drove one of these little speed rockets, you became hooked for life. Well, I bought mine 1st and outlasted our family by a long shot. Owning this car since 1976 and just recently had a 30th year of ownership.
When I eventually move on...my daughter has already informed me that it will become hers and promised to carry on this car's legacy. I guess my life is complete now that she will continue to care for it. Little does she know that I may just take it with me, 8o).
